Adventures Into Citizenship
Adventures has grown over the years to become one of Rotary 9350 flagship leadership development programmes that stretches the learners mind to what possibilities are available to them post matric.
The learners are selected from schools across the country and gather in Cape Town for six days of excitement. They are taken to various institutions to develop an understanding of how they work, benefit the country, our city and how they can develop careers in their future with a focus on being a positive leader.
Rotary Youth Camps
Around 70 years ago, William Haines, a member of the Rotary Club of Cape Town, established the Glencairn farm as a youth camp. Haines, a physical training teacher, aimed to train youth from various backgrounds in physical activities for their holistic development.
When he passed away in 1942, he bequeathed his Glencairn property to two organizations: the Gordons Missionary Society and the Rotary Club of Cape Town.
Adopt a Learner
This project benefits learners in four primary schools in Atlantis, all of which serve socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
The Rotary Club of Cape Town supports selected learners in each of the schools with uniforms, stationery, raincoats, shoes, and contributes to school outings. This support commences in Grade 1 or 2 and continues throughout the junior school years.
House of Youth
The House of Youth in Salt River, led by Pastor John Philmon, supports the homeless community with various initiatives, including regular meals and programmes to help individuals transition off the streets. Group discussions promote self-respect, while a mobile shower trailer ensures hygiene, run by a partner NPO.
Our feeding programme has provided over a million meals in 10 years, serving breakfast at 9 AM and lunch at 12:30 PM with home-cooked food. Recently, we partnered with Nina Manzi Washbus to offer hot showers three times a week, providing soap and towels, along with a weekly change of clothes.
This winter, we distributed over 300 blankets and 200 sleeping bags, all offered free of charge with respect for dignity. Our after-school programme, the Salt River Learning Hub, helps community kids with schoolwork, supported by retired teachers.
The Centre has become a beacon of hope, attracting individuals from Lavender Hill and Manenberg.
Senior Citizen Support
The Senior Security fund was originally established by the generous donation of particular donors who wished to benefit qualifying elderly beneficiaries.
As with many such programmes, it has developed over the years with prudent management and operations so that a large number of beneficiaries have enjoyed subsidized accommodation.
However, with new challenges facing us, we decided to expand the programme to cover specific projects for elderly persons. This is to extend the programme to a wider base of beneficiaries.
